Obama leads 52 percent to 44, according to the poll of 500 likely voters, which has a 4.5 point margin of error.

Obama will likely need to win about half of the electoral votes supplied by Michigan, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and New Hampshire, if he is to secure a second term.

The president won all of those states in 2008, and this is the third poll this week to show Obama with a lead in one of the battleground states.

Obama leads by 4 points in a SurveyUSA poll of North Carolina, and leads by 8 points in a Public Policy Polling survey of Virginia.
