Poll: Obama leads in swing-state Virginia

By Jonathan Easley - 08/21/12 05:20 PM ET

President Obama leads Mitt Romney in the critical swing state of Virginia, according to the latest survey from liberal-leaning Public Policy Polling.

Obama leads Romney 50 percent to 45, according to the poll, which has a 3.4 percent margin of error. Obama led the same poll from last month by 8 percentage points.

Obama holds a 2-percentage-point lead in Virginia, according to the Real Clear Politics average of polls, although last week a Purple Strategies poll showed Romney ahead 48 percent to 45.

According to PPP, Obama’s lead in the state is due to a massive lead among non-white voters. While Romney leads 56 to 40 among whites, Obama leads 75 to 19 among non-whites.

The PPP poll of 855 likely voters was conducted between Aug. 16 and Aug. 19.
