Poll: Obama up double digits in swing-state New Mexico

By Jonathan Easley - 09/12/12 12:46 PM ET

President Obama has a double-digit lead over Mitt Romney in New Mexico, according to a survey released Wednesday from liberal-leaning Public Policy Polling.

Obama takes 53 percent support in New Mexico, compared to 42 percent for Romney. Obama led the same poll in July by only 5 percentage points.

New Mexico is one of 12 battleground states that Obama won in 2008, and it will be critical in determining the outcome of the 2012 election. Although with only five electoral votes at stake, the state has received little attention.

Obama bested Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in New Mexico by 15 points in 2008.

The PPP survey of 1,122 likely voters was conducted Sept. 7-9 and has a 3-point margin of error.
