Democrats have reestablished their edge in party affiliation, with 47 percent of American voters identifying themselves as belonging to the party versus just 42 percent for Republicans, according to a new survey from Gallup.
Democrats have regularly held an advantage in such surveys, although the two parties had been essentially tied in 2010 and 2011. The GOP has only held an advantage in the poll once since Gallup began taking the poll: in 1991, during the Gulf War.
Polling firms typically use voter identification surveys to weigh their polling results — a practice that came under fire during the 2012 presidential election, when some conservative commentators argued that polls unfairly oversampled Democratic voters.

A new poll finds Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) atop a field of potential Republican U.S. Senate candidates vying to challenge Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) in her 2014 reelection bid.
Foxx pulled 17 percent of Republican primary voters surveyed by Democratic firm Public Policy Polling, good for a narrow lead over Rep. Sue Myrick (R-N.C.), the choice of 14 percent of those surveyed.
Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) rounded out the top three with 13 percent, Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-N.C.) drew 11 percent, and former federal prosecutor George Holding earned 9 percent. Congressman-elect Richard Hudson, Mark Meadows, and State Speaker of the House Thom Tillis round out the field, with none earning higher than 6 percent.

Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) leads most potential primary challengers for his Senate seat, according to a new poll, but his biggest challenge would be against former presidential candidate Herman Cain.
According to a survey from the Democratic-leaning Public Policing Polling (PPP) released Tuesday, just 38 percent of Republican primary voters want Chambliss to win the GOP nomination. Chambliss is up for reelection in 2014.
The biggest challenge to Chambliss, the poll found, would be one by Cain, who has said he would not run for
Chambliss's seat. PPP found Cain leading Chambliss 50 to 36 percent in a
head-to-head match-up.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is the clear favorite for reelection in 2013, with a new poll showing him opening a double-digit lead over the top Democrats in the field, including Newark Mayor Cory Booker. In fact, Christie's polling numbers have swelled in the wake of Superstorm Sandy to the point he would even trounce his childhood idol Bruce Springsteen in a hypothetical matchup.
The poll, released Friday by Democratic firm Public Policy polling, showed that 67 percent of New Jersey voters approve of the job Christie is doing, with only a quarter of Garden State voters disapproving of his performance. That includes 65 percent of independents and even 56 percent of Democrats who have a favorable opinion of Christie, higher than any other governor that the polling firm has surveyed nationwide. Nearly nine in 10 voters approve of Christie's handling of the storm.
That's translated into a strong showing at the polls buoying Christie's reelection prospects. He leads Booker, a rising star in the Democratic Party, 50-36 percent in the polls, while besting former Gov. Richard Codey 53-31, New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney 57-20, and State Senator Barbara Buono 60-20.
