Poll: Ron Paul has strongest support base in Iowa

By Jonathan Easley

Ron Paul leads the GOP presidential field in Iowa, according to an Iowa State University poll released on Wednesday, and his supporters are far more likely to say that they are “definitely” going to vote for him on caucus day.

Paul took 27.5 percent of the vote, narrowly edging Newt Gingrich, who came in second at 25.3 percent. Rounding out the field are Mitt Romney at 17.5 percent, Rick Perry at 11.2 percent, Michele Bachmann at 7.4 percent and Rick Santorum at 4.9 percent.

But perhaps the biggest sign of strength for the Texas lawmaker is his solid base of support in what has been an otherwise fluid race. Fifty-one percent of Paul’s supporters said they “definitely” backed the candidate, compared to only 16.1 percent for Romney and 15.2 percent for Gingrich.
