NM Gov. Martinez insists she'd reject GOP VP offer

By Cameron Joseph - 04/09/12 12:08 PM ET

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez (R) forcefully reiterated that she would not accept an offer to be the GOP's vice presidential candidate this election.

Martinez has been on many Republican strategists' short lists: she's an Hispanic female governor who remains popular in a swing state.

Though many past politicians have accepted the vice presidential slot after strongly denying any interest, she told the Albuquerque Journal recently that her responsibility for a developmentally disabled sibling precluded a move to Washington.

"The family has to be a consideration, and for me to take [my sister] to Washington would be to separate her from … the family that's down there, and that would be devastating," Martinez said. "I just couldn’t do it."
