Romney family opens up about Ann's multiple sclerosis in new video

By Cameron Joseph - 05/30/12 12:39 PM ET

"When I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, both of us just dissolved in tears," Ann says at the beginning of the video. "My life was in jeopardy and I was as vulnerable as a person can be. I was frightened, Mitt was frightened, but I needed him desperately."

"Probably the toughest time in my life was standing there with Ann as we hugged each other while the diagnosis came," Romney said.

Clips of the Romneys' sons are then shown. Tagg Romney says his father "really stepped up," while Josh Romney says that the illness "affected my dad as much as it affected my mom."

The video, timed to coincide with World Multiple Sclerosis Day, closes with Romney saying he's "happy in life as long as I've got my soul mate with me," and a prompt to donate to M.S. research.

Romney has trailed President Obama in polls on personal favorability, although his numbers have improved since the GOP primary ended. In a recent ABC News poll, Obama had a 52 percent personal favorability rate while Romney was at 41 percent, an increase from 35 percent in April.

Romney has scored better than Obama on the economy, the key issue of the election, but faces a likeability gap — and this video, the latest in a series of family-centric spots, seems designed to humanize him and show his softer side.
