Liberal Washington Post columnist: Bill Clinton is 'fair game' for Trump
"In the larger scheme of things, Bill Clinton’s conduct toward women is far worse than any of the offensive things that Trump has said," Marcus writes in her Tuesday column.
"Trump has smeared women because of their looks. Clinton has preyed on them, and in a workplace setting where he was by far the superior.
"That is uncomfortable for Clinton supporters but it is unavoidably true."
Weighing how the sins of her husband should factor into the Democratic front-runner's presidential campaign, Marcus argues that Clinton made two moves that led her to agree with Trump on the “fair game” front.
"She is (smartly) using her husband as a campaign surrogate, and simultaneously (correctly) calling Trump sexist," Marcus writes.
"These moves open a dangerous door. It should surprise no one that Trump has barged right through it."
Trump also found another unlikely, though qualified, defender in the only woman running for the Republican presidential nomination — former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina.
"Of course Bill Clinton is fair game,” Fiorina said on Fox News’s Monday episode of “Fox and Friends"
"He’s a former president."
But Fiorina went on to say that she does not believe a Republican will ultimately beat Clinton by attacking her husband.
Trump caused an earlier controversy when he appeared to mock Fiorina's appearance in a Rolling Stone magazine story, saying, "Look at that face! Would anyone vote for that?"
Trump later claimed he was referring to her persona rather than physical appearance but Fiorina received cheers in the second GOP debate when she said that women all over America "heard very clearly what Mr. Trump said."
