Obama camp touts early voting edge in Fla.

By Alexandra Jaffe - 10/28/12 10:21 PM ET

The Obama campaign is touting a 37,000-vote lead from the first day of early voting in Florida, a key battleground that both campaigns hope to snag in the final days of the election.

According to information provided by the campaign, Democrats made up over 48 percent of early voters on the first day, with Republicans comprising a little less than 36 percent.

More than 300,000 Floridians turned out to vote on Saturday, almost double the first-day early voting turnout in 2008 and more than any single day of early voting that year. The high turnout comes as both campaigns have made early voters a priority in battleground states.

Mitt Romney stumped in Florida on Saturday, appealing to women and independents in the state with a plea for bipartisanship and civility in politics. And although Obama wasn't in the state over the weekend, he sent out an army of celebrity surrogates to rally supporters and volunteers on Saturday, and will attend a campaign event there Monday morning with former President Bill Clinton.

Though Romney has held a slight lead in most polls of Florida, the Obama campaign is fiercely contesting the state in hopes of winning its 29 electoral college votes.
