Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum says the U.S. government should give 6 million illegal immigrants the "gift" of mass deportation.

If he is elected president, Santorum said, he would give illegal immigrants from Latin America "the gift to be able to help the country they were born in."

Santorum recounted a story of being in Storm Lake, Iowa, recently, where there were many minority children at the local elementary school. The former Pennsylvania senator said he was asked, "What are you going to do with all these people, their families? They've lived here for a long time."

Santorum said he responded, "I'm going to give them a gift" of sending them back to their home countries.

"We're going to export America," he added. "The education they were able to receive; they learned the English language; they learned about capitalism; they learned about democracy."

"You want to stop the flow of immigrants?" Santorum said. "Let's send 6 million Mexicans, Hondurans, Guatemalans ... back into their country so they can start a renaissance in their country so they won't be coming over here anymore."
