"I'm a Trump fan ever since I met him seven or eight years ago. Everything he does, he does first-class — his hotels, his businesses, his golf courses. The issues all the other politicians failed to discuss, [Trump] is bringing us up to speed."

Damon, best known for playing for the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, competed in a season of Trump's reality TV show "Celebrity Apprentice" in 2015.

He said he backs Trump's policies, including those on immigration.

"Everyone is calling him a racist. He just wants people to come into this country legally and fill out the proper paperwork. That's how I'm viewing it," Damon said, adding that Trump's hard line makes sense in the wake of recent terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, Calif.

He added that Trump's plan to build a wall on the Mexican border would be difficult, but said the businessman is "trying to make the country great."

"I can see other people's views. The country is so split. Building a wall is going to be tough to do, and there would have to be beefing up of patrols," Damon said.

"He's trying to make the country great. We're worrying too much about what's going on in Cuba, the Middle East. We have enough to worry about here," he continued.

"If (Trump) needs me anywhere, I'll be there. He's a good friend."
