“The only path that remains to nominate a Republican rather than Mr. Trump is to have an open convention. At this stage, the only way we can reach an open convention is for Senator Cruz to be successful in as many of the remaining nominating elections as possible,” Romney wrote on Facebook on Friday.

Trump quickly responded to the news via Twitter.

"Failed presidential candidate Mitt Romney, the man who 'choked' and let us all down, is now endorsing Lyin' Ted Cruz. This is good for me!"

Romney, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee, last week campaigned with John Kasich in Ohio, saying that “a vote for Governor Kasich in future contests makes it extremely like that Trumpism would prevail.”

Kasich prevailed in the Buckeye State, denying Trump 66 delegates in the winner-take-all primary earlier this week.

Romney has repeatedly denounced Trump, calling him “a fraud” and “phony” during a speech in early March.

Romney recently said he will support anyone who can beat Trump. He has recorded robocalls for Marco Rubio in addition to campaigning with Kasich.

The New York Times reported that Romney is not endorsing Cruz, however:

Trump endorsed Romney's 2012 campaign for president.

Utah’s Republican caucuses are Tuesday.
