Romney picks Haley in S.C. governor primary

By Aaron Blake - 03/16/10 02:19 PM ET

Mitt Romney is picking sides in the governor's race in a key primary state.

Romney's Free and Strong America PAC announced Tuesday that he is backing state Rep. Nikki Haley in South Carolina's GOP primary.

The potential 2012 presidential candidate isn't picking the favorite -- in fact, some polls have shown Haley as low as fourth place.

“Ann and I got to know Nikki Haley during my campaign for president and came away enormously impressed with her as a person of character and as the spokesperson for a new generation of leadership for South Carolina," Romney said in a statement.
