Romney fundraising off call for healthcare repeal

By Jordan Fabian - 03/23/10 05:18 PM ET

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) Tuesday issued a fundraising appeal for his political action committee centered on repealing the recently-passed healthcare overhaul.

Romney, a presumed presidential candidate for the 2012 race, previously joined other Republican leaders in calling for a repeal of the health law signed by President Barack Obama earlier Tuesday.

"America has been taken down the wrong path by President Obama and the Democrats in Congress, which is why it's critical we elect fiscally-responsible conservative leaders in November who will repeal this bill and restore commonsense principles to healthcare," he said in a fundraising e-mail sent to supporters of his Free and Strong America PAC.

Several Republican candidates for Congress have rapidly declared that they will campaign on a "repeal and replace" strategy since the bill was signed; a gesture to the conservative base that wants the law, for which only Democrats voted, overturned.

But Democrats have singled out Romney for making the call because they say the healthcare system he helped pass as governor of Massachusetts is similar to the one that was just made into law.

Romney has said that the national proposal differs significantly from the national Democrats' law.

Full letter after the jump

******,

President Obama's healthcare bill is unhealthy for America. Without a single Republican vote in the House or the Senate, he pushed through a bill that millions of Americans do not want, and for which we cannot conceivably pay.

Health care reform shouldn't mean higher taxes, cuts to our seniors on Medicare, insurance price controls or greater federal involvement in our lives. But unfortunately that's just what we're getting.

America has been taken down the wrong path by President Obama and the Democrats in Congress, which is why it's critical we elect fiscally-responsible conservative leaders in November who will repeal this bill and restore commonsense principles to healthcare.

That is why I am writing to you today to announce a new initiative at my Free and Strong America PAC called "Prescription for Repeal." Over the coming weeks and months, my PAC will be providing GOP candidates with the support and funding they need to defeat Democrats who supported ObamaCare.

Will you stand with me in this effort with a generous contribution of $25, $50, $100, $250, $500, $1,000, $2,500, or even the maximum $5,000 ? It is only with your support, and the support of Americans like you across the country, that we can make our voices heard and effect the real change that Americans deserve.

Jordan, it is up to us to leave our children and grandchildren an America that is as strong and prosperous as the one we inherited from our parents, and what we do at times like these is critical. I hope you will stand with me today.

Best,

Mitt Romney
