Bennett will back challenger for Utah Senate nod

By Sean J. Miller - 06/10/10 10:35 AM ET

Sen. Bob Bennett (R-Utah) is set to endorse one of men who ended his Senate career.

The three-term incumbent will endorse businessman Tim Bridgewater, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

Bridgewater and Republican Mike Lee knocked Bennett out of the race for the Senate nomination at the state GOP's convention in May.

His endorsement is a mixed blessing, according to experts.

"People have real mixed feelings about him," said Quin Monson, assistant director of the Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy at Brigham Young University. "On the balance, this will probably help Bridgewater more than it will hurt him among those arch-conservatives who cheered when he was defeated."

The primary is June 22.
