Carnahan wins Missouri Senate primary in landslide

Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan (D) easily won her Democratic Senate primary Tuesday.

Carnahan defeated two lesser-known Democrats — former Kansas City Councilor Richard Tolbert and veteran Francis Vangeli.

The Associated Press called the race for Carnahan with just 2 percent of precincts reporting. Carnahan led with 85 percent of the vote to Tolbert's 10 percent. Vangeli was running third with 5 percent of the vote.

Carnahan is expected to face Rep. Roy Blunt (R) in November's general election. Blunt has a commanding lead over a crowded Republican primary field, but the race has yet to be called.

In early returns, Blunt is leading state Sen. Chuck Purgason 73 percent to 12 percent.
