Crist declines 'Meet the Press' debate

Charlie Crist will not be joining his fellow Florida Senate candidates on "Meet the Press" this weekend.

Republican Marco Rubio and Democrat Kendrick Meek are scheduled to appear on the NBC show this Sunday for a debate. Crist was invited to appear but has declined.

A spokesman for Crist told The Miami Herald that "the governor has long planned Labor Day events, when he'll be out talking to working families."

Crist, the Independent candidate, has only accepted one debate invitation thus far — for Oct. 24th in St. Petersburg. Rubio and Meek have agreed to four other debates

The paper points out that back in March, when Crist was still running as a Republican and faced Rubio in the primary, he criticized Rubio for turning down an invitation from NBC's Sunday morning talk show.

Rubio declined to appear on "Meet the Press" because he'd promised Fox News the first debate between him and Crist. At the time, Crist told The Palm Beach Post: "This is a guy who says he’s willing to stand up to Barack Obama, but he won’t sit down with David Gregory on Meet the Press? The hypocrisy and inconsistency from Marco Rubio is appalling.”
