McCain gives $1 million to NRSC

By Alexander Bolton - 09/29/10 02:15 PM ET

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has given $1 million to the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC).

The gift was announced to GOP senators on Wednesday.

The contribution is one of the biggest ever from a GOP senator to the party fundraising committee.

NRSC Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) hopes it will motivate other lawmakers to give generously.

"There's nothing more powerful than a good example," said Cornyn.

Cornyn says limited resources are one of the biggest challenges facing Republican Senate candidates.

McCain is also planning to campaign for GOP Senate nominee Kelly Ayotte in New Hampshire this weekend, according to an aide.

McCain is up for reelection this cycle and made it through a tough primary challenge from former Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R-Ariz.), where he spent nearly $20 million.
