Former Bush OMB head wins Senate seat in Ohio

Republican Rob Portman has defeated Democrat Lee Fisher for Ohio’s Senate seat, a result that was widely expected, given Portman’s 20-point lead in the polls.

A former federal budget director and U.S. trade representative in President George W. Bush's administration, Portman won the seat of Sen. George Voinovich (R), a centrist senator who occasionally crossed the aisle to support Democratic initiatives. Portman led the race from the beginning with the help of impressive fundraising skills, and Fisher, Ohio's lieutenant governor, was unable to close the gap.
