Chaffetz has long hinted at a campaign against the longtime senator, who some — including the deep-pocketed fiscally conservative Club for Growth — have accused of not being conservative enough.

The second-term House member has been traveling around the state, with three town halls outside of his district scheduled this month. Chaffetz has experience running against Republican incumbents: He won his seat in 2008 by beating then-Rep. Chris Cannon (R-Utah).
