Former Ariz. governor backs Carmona for Senate

Former U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona picked up the support Wednesday of former Arizona Gov. Rose Mofford (D) for his campaign to replace retiring Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.).

Mofford served four terms as Arizona's secretary of state before assuming the role of governor after Gov. Evan Mecham (R-Ariz.) was impeached.

“Rich knows what it means to struggle and to overcome obstacles, so Arizona families can trust him to put their needs ahead of party politics," Mofford said in a statement announcing her endorsement.

After being heavily recruited by Democrats in Washington, Carmona announced his bid for the Senate on Nov. 10, but has made no public appearances in the weeks since. His campaign said he will make a formal announcement after the holidays.
