Republican Wilson trails in New Mexico Senate money race
Former Rep. Heather Wilson (R-N.M.) raised $375,000 in the last quarter and has $1.1 million cash on hand, putting her behind her likely general election opponent, Rep. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.).
Heinrich has $1.4 million in the bank after raising $483,000 last quarter.
To put things in perspective, Wilson's $375,000 haul over three months is the same amount that she raised in one day at a 2006 fundraiser with then-President George W. Bush.
Heinrich's cash advantage could shrink, however — he holds a strong but not insurmountable primary lead over New Mexico state auditor Hector Balderas, which could force him to spend money, while Wilson has a huge lead over her primary foes, according to recent polling. But for now he has the edge in money.
New Mexico is increasingly Democratic-leaning, but Republicans hope the centrist Wilson can win the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.).
