Former Indian Trail Councilman and Star Trek fan David Waddell has been cleared to challenge Hagan by the North Carolina Board of Elections. The board certified he collected enough signatures to appear as a write-in candidate.

Waddell said he wrote the four-sentence letter of resignation in Klingon as an inside joke with the town's mayor, not expecting it to go viral online.

The letter itself will live long and prosper on the Internet, though it remains to be seen whether his campaign will get as much attention.
