Stenberg town hall scrapped after no one shows

By Josh Lederman - 05/07/12 09:43 AM ET

A town hall meeting on gun rights hosted by Nebraska state Treasurer Don Stenberg, a GOP candidate for Senate, was scrapped when nobody showed up.

Stenberg had hoped to discuss the Fast and Furious investigation and Attorney General Eric Holder at the forum sponsored by Gun Owners of America, the Grand Island Independent reported.

Stenberg has attempted to score points off of his top Republican opponent, state Attorney General Jon Bruning, by pointing to Bruning’s support for Holder’s nomination to head the Department of Justice. Many Republicans have blamed Holder and a lack of oversight for the botched gun-tracking operation that became known as Fast and Furious.

Stenberg has been running second in the polls in the GOP primary for retiring Sen. Ben Nelson’s (D-Neb.) seat, behind Bruning but ahead of state Sen. Deb Fischer. The winner of the May 15 primary will face former Sen. Bob Kerrey (D-Neb.).
