Dems work to tie Brown to Wall Street in Massachusetts

By Josh Lederman - 05/07/12 10:11 AM ET

Democrats in Massachusetts are trying to tie Sen. Scott Brown (R) to unpopular big banks with a new video attacking him for raising major money from Wall Street.

The video released Monday by the Massachusetts Democratic Party displays a long list of banks that have donated to Brown, to the tune of Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.” It notes that Brown tops the list of senators receiving donations from hedge funds and venture-capital firms.

Democrats also circulated a Boston Globe story Monday that showed that Brown collected more cash from New York in the first quarter of 2012 than he did from Boston or any other city in Massachusetts. The figures only include itemized donations of $200 or more.

But the efforts to refocus the conversation on Brown and his donations could reflect an attempt to distract from another issue dominating Brown’s reelection race against Democrat Elizabeth Warren. A consumer advocate and Harvard Law professor, Warren has come under attack in recent weeks for claiming minority status during her career in academia. Warren claims to have Native American ancestry but has struggled to substantiate as much.

Earlier in the campaign, Republicans also attempted to use Wall Street against Warren, who has made the fight against big banks a central theme of her campaign. Republicans have called on Warren to stop accepting money from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, which counts Wall Street among its donors.
