Jeb Bush endorses Tommy Thompson for Senate

By Cameron Joseph - 05/07/12 11:37 AM ET

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) endorsed former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson (R) for Senate Monday morning.

"If we're going to get America back on track, we need Tommy in the U.S. Senate," Bush said in a statement sent by Thompson's campaign.

While Bush is an establishment figure, he is also well-respected by movement conservatives and could give Thompson a bit of a boost in his contested Senate primary against former Rep. Mark Neumann (R-Wis.), businessman Eric Hovde (R) and Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald (R).

Bush is the latest in a string of Republican former governors who have backed Thompson. He also has the support of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R), former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge (R), former Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne (R), former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt (R), former Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating (R), former Kansas Gov. Bill Graves (R), former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld (R) and former Michigan Gov. John Engler (R).

Neumann has the backing of some Tea Party groups as well as the deep-pocketed, fiscally conservative Club for Growth, while Hovde is a self-funder who is spending heavily on the race.
