Tester touts splits with Obama in new ad

By Cameron Joseph - 08/07/12 08:36 AM ET

Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) is out with a new ad touting his breaks with President Obama and other Democrats on issues ranging from the government bailouts of Wall Street and the auto industry to keeping wolves on the endangered species list.

"Why are out-of-state corporate super-PACs attacking Jon Tester? Because Jon always puts Montana first," the ad says. "Jon was the only Democrat who voted against both the Wall Street and auto bailouts. Jon took on the Obama administration to de-list wolves, saying 'that's what's right for Montana,' voted for the Keystone pipeline to create jobs and energy security, and voted in favor of a balanced-budget amendment. Jon Tester: Doing what's right for Montana, always."

The ad is running statewide with $90,000 behind it, the latest in a series of small but not insignificant buys from the Tester campaign.

He and Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-Mont.) are locked in a tight race in the GOP-leaning but fiercely independent state, and the fight over who can better appeal to populist-leaning independents who hate both parties will likely determine the election.
