Scott Brown: Akin's comments 'outrageous,' calls for apology

By Alexandra Jaffe - 08/20/12 10:08 AM ET

Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.), locked in a contentious battle with Democrat Elizabeth Warren to keep his Senate seat, is the latest Republican to denounce Rep. Todd Akin's (R-Mo.) comments on rape and pregnancy, indicating this is an issue that could dog the Republican nominee for Missouri's Senate seat.

"I found Todd Akin’s comments about rape victims outrageous and way over the line. He needs to apologize," Brown tweeted on Monday morning.

Brown and others, including Montana Republican Denny Rehberg, have begun to distance themselves from the congressman's comments. In an interview released on Sunday, Akin said that, in cases of "legitimate rape," "the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

The furor surrounding the comments from both parties has caused some Republicans to wonder whether the Missouri GOP needs to replace Akin to remain competitive in the race.
