No help for Akin from RNC

By Amie Parnes - 09/23/12 11:47 AM ET
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus expressed confidence that Republicans can win a majority in the Senate but maintained that they won't be supporting embattled candidate Todd Akin.

"We're not going to play in Missouri with Todd Akin, I can tell you that," Priebus said on ABC's “This Week.” "So it'll be yet to be seen whether he stays or not."

Akin has apologized for controversial comments about “legitimate rape” but has refused to leave the Missouri Senate race.

While he distanced himself from Priebus, he praised others Senate candidates like former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson, whom he called a "legend."

"It's like Harley Davidson, Miller Lite, Tommy Thompson," Priebus said. "He is a brand. He's going to win."

The RNC chairman predicted that the GOP has "great opportunities" and a good shot of winning in states including Nebraska, Hawaii and Florida.
