The GOP political juggernauts American Crossroads and Crossroads GPS are up with another big ad buy, a $5.5 million purchase for ads in Florida, Indiana, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia.
In the Virginia Senate race, the group
attacks former Gov. Tim Kaine's (D) for a recent debate misstep in which he
says he'd be "open to a proposal that would have some minimum tax level for everyone," a comment that Kaine's opponent, former Sen. George Allen (R-Va.), also
pounced on in a new ad. The ad then accuses Kaine of wanting to raise taxes and hits him for supporting the bipartisan deal that created sequestration cuts to military and other government spending, a big deal in the military-heavy state. Kaine has laid out a plan to avoid the impending cuts.
The Indiana ad ties Rep. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) to President Obama on spending and attacks him for voting for Democrats' healthcare overhaul and the stimulus. Other ads attack Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.) on ethics issues and accuse her of supporting tax hikes, slam Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) for voting for the healthcare overhaul, saying it cost Ohio jobs, and accuse Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) of supporting Medicare rationing because he supported Democrats' healthcare law.
Indiana, Nevada and Virginia are pure toss-up races. While Florida and Ohio both lean Democratic, GOP outside groups, especially Crossroads, have been spending heavily in both states to target the Democratic incumbents there.
