Allen has raised $11.2 million so far for the race and has $2.6 million left for the closing days of the campaign, though he hasn't finished reserving airtime for commercials. Kaine has outraised Allen in every fundraising quarter since the campaign began. Allen's campaign spent heavily on the ground game over the summer, and had to cancel a week of advertising earlier this month.

Still, outside groups are spending heavily on the race and it is unlikely either side will have a major edge on the airwaves in the closing weeks of the campaign.

Recent polls show Kaine pulling ahead of Allen and outside polls' margin of error for the first time in the campaign, though Mitt Romney's strong performance at Wednesday's debate may have shifted the political picture in the state.
