The Republican outside group Crossroads GPS has invested another $4 million in Senate ads that will run in five states: Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin.
The ads hit Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) for fighting to protect banks' credit card "swipe fees," a position most Republicans hold but which led to big lobbyist donations to his campaign.
The group calls former North Dakota Attorney General Heidi Heitkamp (D) an "Obama rubber stamp," says Sen. Sherrod Brown's (D-Ohio) "vision for Ohio jobs is out of focus," slams former Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine (D) for supporting the bipartisan deal that created the looming defense sequestration in exchange for raising the debt ceiling, and says Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) wanted to "go beyond ObamaCare to create a government-controlled health system."
The Ohio ad specifically asks Ohioans to "Vote no on Sherrod Brown for U.S. Senate," which appears to violate the law, since GPS is a policy advocacy group that is not supposed to undertake straight electioneering and thus doesn't have to disclose its donors.
Four of the races are toss-ups. Ohio leans Democratic, but Republicans think the race is tightening and have continued to spend there.
