Sen. Sanders wins reelection in Vermont

By Alexandra Jaffe - 11/06/12 08:08 PM ET

The first Senate race of the night has been called in favor of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I), who defeated Republican John MacGovern to retain his Senate seat in Vermont, according to Associated Press projections.

Sanders never faced much of a challenge from MacGovern and had been expected to sail to a win in the deep-blue state from the start of the race.

President Obama is also projected to win the state and its three Electoral College votes.
