Hirono wins Hawaii race, will be first Asian-American female senator

Rep. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) has won her Hawaii Senate race, making her the Japanese immigrant and the first Asian-American woman to win a Senate seat.

Hirono defeated former Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle (R). The Associated Press has called the race.

Lingle was a highly touted GOP recruit, but the state's heavy Democratic lean was too much for her.
