George Allen done running for office

By Cameron Joseph - 11/13/12 05:58 PM ET

Former Sen. George Allen (R-Va.) is done running for office after three decades in political life.

"I have no intention of running for office again," Allen said in an interview with the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Allen lost a bid for his old Senate seat to former Gov. Tim Kaine (D) last Tuesday, marking what he says is his final campaign. He was first elected as a state delegate in 1982, won a U.S. House seat in 1991, became governor in 1994 and after a few years in the private sector won his Senate seat in 2002.

He said he had no regrets about the campaign he ran, pointing out that he and Mitt Romney had run on similar platforms, and finished with similar results.

"When you're running in a presidential year, the top of the ticket matters a lot," he said. "Especially with an open seat, that matters. And we ran as close to the top of the ticket, I think, as any open seat in the country. ... Obviously we’re disappointed with the results, but looking back on it, I can't think of anything that would have made a difference."
