Mourdock email blames 'liberal media' for his Senate loss

By Cameron Joseph - 12/11/12 11:52 AM ET

A new fundraising email from former Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock's (R) campaign blames the "liberal media" for his loss to Sen.-elect Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.).

"After a bitter, hard-fought campaign, many Republicans all over the country were forced to accept defeat rather than celebrate victory. In our case, we found our campaign caught in the liberal media crosshairs. Never has Indiana seen a more obvious example of media bias by reporters more interested in defeating conservatives than reporting the news," Mourdock Finance Director Ashlee Walls writes in a fundraising plea to supporters.

"We fought back and invested heavily in a last-minute push to combat the slew of false accusations Democrats and the liberal media churned up to distract voters."

The email then asks for donations to help pay for a "few last-minute bills."

Mourdock's campaign was damaged by his controversial remarks over rape and abortion during an October debate and the ensuing media firestorm, though he'd already been struggling because of earlier comments opposing bipartisanship. He also failed to win over independents and centrist Republicans who had warm feelings toward the man he beat in the GOP primary, outgoing Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.). Donnelly won the race in the conservative state by 50 percent to 44.
