Rand Paul on Senate run in 2016: 'That will happen'

By Alexandra Jaffe - 12/17/12 09:29 AM ET

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is insisting he will run for Senate in 2016, despite  speculation that he would be a top Republican pick for president that year.

"I'm really not going to equivocate on whether I'm running for Senate or not," Paul said, according to the Associated Press. "That will happen."

Paul is barred from running in both the Senate and presidential races by Kentucky law, so if he is mulling a presidential bid he'd have to be willing to give up his chances at reelection to pursue higher office.

Paul told reporters, however, that "it will probably be two years before we have a serious discussion" about a presidential run.

He also said that he hasn't yet pursued a law change in the state, to allow him to run for two offices at the same time.

"We have not looked at that or discussed that with anybody," he said. "The only thing that we have made absolute plans is that I have formed a reelection committee and I will run for the U.S. Senate."
