Report: Reid meets with top Democratic recruit for Sen. Rockefeller's seat

By Alexandra Jaffe - 02/01/13 12:29 PM ET

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) met with Carte Goodwin, a potential Democratic Senate contender in West Virginia who has yet to indicate his interest in the race for retiring Sen. Jay Rockefeller's (D-W.Va.) seat.

According to The Associated Press, the two met on Thursday in the Capitol. It's unclear what other Democratic recruits Reid has met recently.

Republicans already have their top recruit for the race in Rep. Shelly Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), who announced late last year that she would be pursuing the seat.

But the Democratic field remains in flux, with a handful of potential contenders already indicating their interest in the seat, including Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.), Secretary of State Natalie Tennant, and former state Democratic Party Chairman Mike Callaghan.

Goodwin, however, remains at the top of many Democrats' lists for the seat. He served briefly in the senate following Sen. Robert Byrd's (D-W.Va.) death, and retains strong name recognition in the state.
