Conservative women's group endorses Capito for Senate

By Alexandra Jaffe - 02/13/13 09:58 AM ET

Maggie's List, a group working to elect conservative female politicians, has endorsed Rep. Shelly Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) in her bid for retiring Sen. Jay Rockefeller's (D-W.Va.) seat.

“Maggie’s List is intently focused on getting more fiscally conservative women elected to Congress and we are thrilled to endorse Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito in her run for West Virginia’s Senate seat," said Betty Ireland, former West Virginia secretary of State and a member of the Maggie's List board, in a statement.

Maggie's List Chairman Sandra Mortham called Capito "a strong candidate" with "the right ingredients for victory."

Capito's entry into the race was an early recruiting victory for Republicans, and she's poised to make a strong showing in red-leaning West Virginia.

In her bid for the seat, Capito has the added advantage of being a woman, representing a swath of voters with which the GOP had trouble in 2012. According to a recent poll, Capito would lead any comers, including the most probable Democratic candidate, Rep. Nick Rahall, by double-digit margins.
