Schweitzer denies interest in Senate run

By Cameron Joseph - 02/22/13 10:08 AM ET

Former Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D) is denying any interest in running for the Senate, tamping down speculation that he might challenge Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) in a primary.

"I am not goofy enough to be in the House, and I'm not senile enough to be in the Senate," Schweitzer told KPAX in Montana, repeating a line he's used before about the race.

A recent poll showed him leading Baucus in the primary by a wide margin, and the posting of that poll on Schweitzer's Facebook page had stoked questions about whether he might indeed be interested in running for the seat.

But Schweitzer said he hadn't seen the poll and lets staff run his Facebook page, and didn't know they'd posted it.

He did tease what KPAX described as "big news" in the next week or so, though it's unclear what he'll announce. Schweitzer is also rumored to be interested in a run for president, though it's likely too early in the election cycle for prospective candidates to announce their intentions.
