Mitt Romney's niece eyeing Senate run in Michigan

By Cameron Joseph - 03/13/13 09:22 AM ET

Mitt Romney's brother won't run for the Senate in Michigan — but his niece might.

"It's something I'm going to consider (after) what I saw around the state with how frustrated people were with what's happening in D.C.," Ronna Romney McDaniel told The Detroit News Tuesday night. "Maybe this is a time where we can bring a new voice and get a Republican senator from our state."

Scott Romney, her father and Mitt's older brother, had been mulling a bid. But ruled it out Tuesday night, telling the newspaper that "it just wasn't right for me at this time" and encouraging her to run instead.

Romney McDaniel was active in her uncle's presidential campaign last year. Her mother, Ronna Romney, had two unsuccessful runs for the Senate in the 1990s.

Democrats are favored to hold onto retiring Sen. Carl Levin's (D-Mich.) seat in the blue-leaning state.
