Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) would start off with a big lead against Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) in a potential Senate contest, according to a new poll.
Warner leads McDonnell in the hypothetical match-up 51 percent to 35 percent, according to a survey from the University of Mary Washington.
Warner recently said he'll definitely run for reelection, while McDonnell, who is term-limited, hasn't said what his future plans hold. But most Virginia GOP strategists say they don't expect him to take on the popular Warner.
The poll also found a tight gubernatorial race, with Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R) statistically tied.
The poll of 1,004 registered Virginia voters was conducted from March 20-24 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
