Cornyn raises $2.3M, tops Senate candidates

Cornyn now has $5.9 million in the bank. The sum will help him ward off any primary challengers in the state, though none have emerged at this point.

It's unusual for senators not likely to face tough elections to raise such large sums, but Texas is a huge source of campaign donations and Cornyn is well-connected to the GOP's donor base after a two-term stint as head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Cornyn edges Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who raised $2.2 million for the quarter. Sens. Al Franken (D-Minn.) and Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) both raised around $2 million. The fundraising quarter ended June 30, and reports are due Monday.
