Giannoulias donor caught fleeing charges

By Aaron Blake - 03/12/10 12:01 PM ET

Things are getting very Chicago in Chicago.

A benefactor of Alexi Giannoulias's (D) political campaigns was reportedly caught trying to flee the country amidst charges in a check-kiting scandal.

Nick Giannis, who contributed $4,800 to Giannoulias's Senate campaign and much more to his state Treasurer campaign four years ago, was arrested Thursday in Detroit, while on his way to Canada.

Giannis and his son are charged with bilking the Giannoulias family bank and another bank out of nearly $2 million by writing bad checks.

Giannoulias's campaign has said it will donate Giannis's money to charity.
