Poll shows Hayworth closing in on McCain

By Sean J. Miller - 03/18/10 11:49 AM ET

A new Rasmussen Reports poll shows ex-Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R-Ariz.) within touching distance of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). The new survey of 541 likely GOP primary voters had 48 percent supporting McCain, 41 percent said they were backing Hayworth and 8 percent were undecided. The results also showed that both men have their enemies -- 15 percent of respondents said they viewed the two Republicans as "very unfavorable."

An official with the McCain camp was nonplussed -- noting the internals for "both campaigns" have been consistent in showing McCain with a strong 16-plus point advantage. Moreover, the official said, the same poll showed the race tied back in November and then McCain up 22 points in January.

As Hayworth's camp struggles to retune after a shakeup, McCain is set to get a momentum boost. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) will headline two rallies with the senator next week.
