Hayworth fundraising falls short in his challenge to Sen. McCain

By Sean J. Miller - 04/01/10 07:37 AM ET

J.D. Hayworth didn't meet his March fundraising goal, falling more than $60,000 short of the $1 million target, according to his website.

Hayworth hasn't yet released his quarterly numbers but John McCain's campaign is already pointing to irregularities in the rate by which money accumulated. It wants to know if Hayworth is counting pledges as well as actual donations.

The key will be finding out how much cash on hand the GOP challenger is reporting. A flush bank account will help Hayworth convince skeptics he's got a shot at defeating the Arizona senator.
