Hayworth says he raised more than $1 million in his primary challenge to Sen. McCain

By Sean J. Miller - 04/01/10 03:50 PM ET

Former Rep. J.D. Hayworth raised more than $1 million this quarter in his primary challenge to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), his campaign announced Thursday.

Earlier his website reported he'd fallen $60,000 short of his $1 million March fundraising goal. Hayworth officially launched his primary challenge to McCain on Feb. 15, which was halfway through the first-quarter fundraising period.

The McCain campaign questioned if Hayworth was counting pledges in addition to donations. But Hayworth's camp said it "raised over $23,500 per day in cash, checks, and credit cards, no pledges included."

On Wednesday, McCain announced he'd raised $2.2 million and had $4.5 million cash on hand.
