Wisconsin Secretary of Commerce Dick Leinenkugel (R) said Sunday he is dropping his bid for the U.S. Senate.
Leinenkugel, a former executive at Chippewa Falls Beer Company, endorsed businessman Ron Johnson (R) to run against Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.)
Here is more from the Associated Press:
Leinenkugel's announcement today at the state Republicans' convention in Milwaukee seemed to catch the hundreds of delegates off guard. Many gasped when the former beer mogul said now isn't his time.
Leinenkugel says he is formally endorsing Johnson.
Leinenkugel's brief campaign never really got off the ground. He served 19 months as the state's commerce secretary in the administration of Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle. That left some Republicans wary of Leinenkugel's conservative credentials.
With Leinenkugel out, the remaining GOP candidates are Johnson, Madison-area developer Terrence Wall and Watertown businessman Dave Westlake.
