The political action committee for Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) is rallying to the defense of Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) as she takes heat for voting against stricter gun controls.
Reclaim America PAC is set to air a new ad defending Ayotte against negative advertising by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a group associated with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg that is pushing for stricter gun laws. "Safety, security, family. No one understands these things like a mom. And no one works harder for these things than this one," the voiceover in the ad, which a source confirmed is set to air Tuesday, says. "A former prosecutor, Kelly Ayotte knows how to reduce gun violence."
The source said the spending for the ad is in the six figure range.
Ayotte voted against legislation expanding background checks to include purchases at gun shows and online. Polling has shown a drop in Ayotte’s standing in New Hampshire since the vote, with her unfavorable rating rising from 24 percent to 31 percent. The National Rifle Association (NRA) launched an ad campaign last week to counter the criticism of Ayotte. In the NRA ad, a narrator asks if people have "seen this TV ad paid for by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg” and tells viewers not to believe it.
The new Reclaim America ad was first reported by The Daily Caller.
