Former Sen. Pete Domenici dies at 85

Former Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) died on Wednesday morning at the age of 85, his family confirmed to the Albuquerque Journal.

Domenici was the longest-serving senator in New Mexico's history, holding office from 1973 to 2009. He was formerly the mayor of Albuquerque and chaired both the Budget and Energy and Natural Resources Committees.

Domenici was planning to run for another term in 2007 until his doctors diagnosed him with a degenerative brain disease, according to the Journal. He subsequently retired.

Domenici was in intensive care for his recovery from a recent abdominal surgery when he died. His death occurred on the same morning of the Domenici Public Policy Conference, an annual event sponsored by the New Mexico State University featuring former ambassadors and administration officials.
